yeah - welcome to europe... thats really normal. everwhere and dont come to the party tonight if you dont like the smoke. ;)
I wonder why smoking is allowed inside the building, especially in front of the keynotes room.

I absolutely hate the smoking as well. It's just impossible to avoid .. and talking about Europe ...
I would like to point out that Great Britain is non smoking as well. Even before the ban in pubs, bars and restaurants, smoking in public places was banned.
I'm sorry that you are having problems with it, being a smoker myself. Maybe the ashtrays are not very well placed.

Italy is non smoking, I'm a smoker but I was surprised about all that smoke in front of the keynotes rooms, and I'm not glad to come back to the hotel and need to change clothes...
A half year later and that will be disallowed here too.
The local governments of the countries already decided to ban smoking in all restaurants and public places.
But it takes time till the parlaments in the countries make law out of it.
(Even if many parlamentaria get donors from the tabac industry).
I feel sorry about smokers and their bad habit of ruining their body. It is actually a very addictive habit and it is quite hard to quit.
I believe that the point is not about somoking, but about somking in public, closed places.
In Germany (and Europe) people have a right to smoke. In public spaces. Indoors.
However, given the alternative of a "suitable" space, IMHO is preferrable to both smokers and non-smokers alike.
By "suitable" I mean;
- Outside
- Dry (Covered from rain)
- Still (A corner/wall blocking strong wind)
- Nearby the presentations (No 1 mile walk)
Really looking forward to smoking bans in Germany and also good to see that even smokers can adapt if it's not allowed anymore. Of course it would be even better (for them) if they would quit. Yes, I know it's hard.
Ok, you complaining people above here: I was never asked by one of you NOT to smoke. If you feel pissed off by smokers, tell them. You got a mouth for speaking to others, not for complaining about being unhappy in online boards.

and because asking smokers not to smoke all the time is sort of annoying, I am looking forward to the smoking bans ;-)
Yes the smoking was a problem for me as well. I am not too happy about the cigarette odor in my clothes as I unpacked this am. I don't mind if people smoke at a venue as long as it is organised that I had have to constantly walk through "smoke zones" to move from one event to another. And I don't think that individuals asking other individuals to cease smoking is the answer. This is an organisational problem.

Welcome to Berlin. It's kinda like the US in the 50s with regard to smoking. I'm surprised Lufthansa doesn't still allow it. ;)
