"Enterprise 2.0: Tools for Changing Organizations": commented by Fredrik Matheson

I work with large organizations keen on trying a collaborative, participative tack. The biggest difficulty is that no one knows quite what works, what doesn't and why. The field is still so new.

My biggest takeaway from this session came from the honest comment by Lee Bryant that "no one really knows what works yet, but we know it's not a technology thing". When leafing through the latest reports from McKinsey, O'reilly and the like, I find lots of nice, sellable quotes, but never any stories from the trenches (as Simon mentions above).

So for me, the few concrete pieces of advice (and the clear message that we've still got a long way to go) were among the most valuable ideas I took home from the conference.

"Simon Wardley": commented by Fredrik Matheson

Simon's presentation was top notch. He could have made a more sexy title for it because the implications of his talk are wide-ranging and the details he shared with us are exceptionally relevant. Whereas most of the conference dealt with minutiae and "hot schtuff" of the "let's get rich"-kind, this was the real thing. I've watched it again at his blog to delve deeper into the material and take notes.

From a presentation technique point of view, Simon's was the best at the conference. Neither Don Tapscott, Kathy Sierra or Jesse James Garrett came close to matching his work. Yes, they were great but he was great, thorough and thoroughly annotated.

As I have mentioned in other places at this site, there is a need for thought leadership that extends past the newest combination of technology and design. Much of the talk about web 2.0 is reminiscent of the fable of Five Blind Men and the Elephant, where each of describes a separate part but no one sees the whole. I'm pretty sure that Simon has a better vantage point than I do, but at least I know that I should stop trying to explain what web 2.0 is and instead look at the deep changes taking part in our society and how they are reflected in different venues and arenas, including the web.

I was really impressed by the thoroughness and rigor of Simon's work and hope the see more presenters with a boatload of facts and well-detailed hypotheses at next year's conference.

Simply splendid.

"Designing for a Web of Data": commented by Fredrik Matheson

I'd love to have this session on video to share with my colleagues back home. Tom's comments were insightful and his presentation was engaging – and gorgeous to look at.

I particularly enjoyed his discussion of hierarchies versus data-driven navigation, where he pointed out that the hierarchy, after all, is just another information vector. There's really no need to have the two sides argue, we should think about discoverability instead. What I would like to hear a bit about from Tom next time would be how to design mechanisms that nudge participation and data-driven navigation in certain directions. Given near-infinite paths and combinations in a web service, how can you design the individual "destinations" to be as relevant and considerately linked as possible?

"Enterprise 2.0": commented by Fredrik Matheson

Don Tapscott was an inspiring closer of the conference. His talk was relevant, well-detailed and had great flow. I hope it'll be available online soon as I'd like to show this keynote at work.

I think the biggest implication of Don's talk is this: having stretched our minds to look beyond the narrow confines of "web 2.0" and see the bigger picture, does it really make sense to keep calling the conference "Web 2.0"?. We could, of course, title the conference "Enterprise 2.0" for next year's round, but there's already one of those conferences around. Simon Wardley's presentation made the same point clear: "2.0" was just the first inkling of a broader movement that is neither serially numbered or limited to the web.

For next year's batch of talks I'd love to have more talks that gave some detailed experiences of how people are implementing new practices in their organizations – or even re-working the organizations themselves to deal with the new collaborative, crowd-worked world. Good luck with finding a title, though …

In addition to the problems mentioned about lunch quality, another thing that the venue had a hard time offering was a nice place to actually eat your lunch.
